Admiral McRaven addresses the University of Texas at Austin Class of 2014 – Outstanding Leadership Pitch

Admiral William McRaven, Commander of the United States Special Operations Command gave a commencement speech to the  University of Texas at Austin Class of 2014, his alma mater, where he shared his perspective on how the students can change the world.  He encouraged each student to help change the lives of just 10 people.

Adm McRaven presented that if every one of the students changed the lives of just ten people—and each one of those folks changed the lives of another ten people, then in five generations—125 years—the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800 million people.

Adm McRaven went on to present ten life and leadership principles that, if followed, would help the Class of 2014 become world changers based upon his 36 years in the U.S. Navy and the six months that he spent in Basic SEAL training in Coronado, California. The ten principles are listed below.

  1. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed;
  2. If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle;
  3. If you want to change the world, measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers;
  4. If you want to change the world get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward;
  5. But if you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses;
  6. If you want to change the world sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head first;
  7. So, If you want to change the world, don’t back down from the sharks;
  8. If you want to change the world, you must be your very best in the darkest moment;
  9. So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud;
  10. If you want to change the world don’t ever, ever ring the bell.
